Den Artist

As I mentioned in my “Aux vieux Bruxelles” post, I often have foreign friends and colleagues visiting.  If I can be honest with you, I prefer to receive them in in Antwerp, as this is the town where I grew up and that I know best. A restaurant that I always like to take them is “Brasserie Den Artist”.  They serve mainly  traditional Belgian food like “Steak Tartare”, this “Stoofvlees” (Belgian stew), “Stoemp met worst” ( mashed potatoes  (+other vegetables in it) with sausage and gravy) “Witloof in de oven” (Ham and chicory role served with béchamel sauce), Mussels, Vol-au-vent,  etc… All prepared as it should be prepared. But they always give it their own twist, like the “vol-au-vent “, they added some Tarragon, what really gives this dish this little something extra. at “Den Artist.  Of course this comes with freshly made French fries.  Even my Italian colleagues have enjoyed this restaurant…and usually Italians are the most difficult to convince 😉

Besides the exquisite food, “Den Artist” is greatly located. It has a magnificent frontal view of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts.  A majestic neoclassical building (makes you think of a Greek temple)… really impressive. “Den Artist” is in the Southern part of Antwerp (town) and is considered as the more trendy part of town.

Have you been there already?

Monaco low profile

Playground for the rich and famous you might say? I won’t be able to afford Monaco? Well people, you are wrong!! It’s not that you’ll be living there 🙂 I had the chance to go to Monaco on different occasions and none of those times ruined me. Monaco is a place that you can make as expensive and cheap as you would want… Of course if you are staying at ‘hotel de Paris’ or eat at Alain Ducasse, I’m sure your pocket will feel a lot lighter afterwards.  Follow my lead and I am sure you’ll enjoy Monaco in a normal, but still fancy way.

When you visit Monaco or Monte Carlo a few ‘must see’ attractions are obviously the place du casino and it’s casino (you won’t be able to enter in swimwear), the Royal Palace and if you like sea life I’m sure the oceanographic museum will be something for you.  The famous tunnel under the Fairmont Hotel where yearly the F1 takes brings you to the port. But did you know that Monte Carlo also has a normal beach? It is  not enormous, but big enough to fit some people. For car lovers, the Ferrari museum is a must. The limited edition beauties that you’ll find there are unique. A place where you can find your inner self Is the Japanese garden, right next to the Grimaldi forum, overlooking the Mediterranean sea (that would already be relaxing for me). Going the the open-air cinema (cinema d’été) next to the Oceanographic museum is also a thing that you should really do. Or maybe eating an ice cream in the Häagen-Dazs garden ice salon in front of  the casino sounds more appealing to you? A small anecdote to show that Monaco doesn’t always have to be expensive. Once I bought a special Ferrari toilet seat in Monaco,  as for the price I would pay in Belgium I could buy 3 in Monaco! (true story)

When going to Monaco you could of course stay in a close by city and just go to Monaco for a day, but you really have to try weekend night in Monaco in summertime. Two hotels that are nice and still reasonable of price are the Novotel and Hotel Ambassador (and good located right next to the underground train station). Check Booking.com for good prices. I’m sure once you’ve spend one or a few nights you’ll agree. The whole summer there is a fireworks contest between countries who send their very best firework specialists. In the weekends Monaco is really the place to be, you’ll see more fancy cars then you can dream of, you might also bump into a celebrity or two. In the weekend this Principality really comes to life.

But I’m starting to feel hungry, we didn’t eat yet. I don’t know if you have ever eaten a pizza with a Foi gras and asparagus toping? If you want to try this you should go to restaurant “Le Bambi”. Or maybe some “Gambas a la plancha” are more of your preference, in that case Le Baobab would be a nice choice. My first time in Monaco, I went to a very nice Italian restaurant in the street right in front of the Royal Palace, Il Pinocchio (lots of famous people love this restaurant). One of Prince Albert’s preferred restaurant is Sass Café, so who knows …  A friend of mine tried and enjoyed the “La villa” These restaurants are just a few of the places I’ve tried in Monaco. The three I’ve given are of a normal price range. “Sass” and “La Villa” might be a bit pricer, but still acceptable.  If would like more know more Monaco restaurants, don’t hesitate to ask or check the restaurants of monte carlo website.

Buon Viaggio!

Lunchbox

I would lie if I would say that I don’ t like greasy food J  . I could of course always temper this hunger by going to the traditional fast-food chain restaurant … but as you might know by now, I always like something more special. When I really feel like grabbing a great burger,  I go to “Lunchbox”. This places serves the best freshly made hamburger with fresh bread. Besides that they also have great wraps and wok dishes. All the products used in this restaurant are from excellent quality. If you for example take the Chicken steak, this would be a hamburger with a real chicken filet, pineapple, ketchup, onion and some salad (accompanied with French fries and a tasty salad). The bigger challenge would be taking the mega bacon burger, I cannot even fit it in my mouth. I also like the tuna melt, a wrap with tuna and cheddar cheese. For all you vegies, don’t worry they also have a ton of vegetarian dishes!!

If after eating all of that and you would still find a spot,  you should definitely take one of their homemade muffins, brownies or other sweets (my favorite is the raspberry apple muffin)

Lunchbox is located in the “Quartier Latin”, not sure why they gave it this name (but let’s just accept it). Right across the “Stadschouwburg” (city theater) on the big square. In summertime they always have a big terrace on this square (with blankets in case the ladies get cold)

If you would go there in weekends, on the big square, there is a very big open air market called “Vogeltjes markt”.

Glorious

Two days ago I had a nice dinner at Bistro and winebar “The Glorious”. I actually arrived a little bit too late, so my friends already started with a glass of champagne (not bad for a Tuesday night). When I arrived I could off course not do less than my friends, so I joined them in their champagne vibe. It was a nice glass of champagne, but for a winebar I would have expected that they would have chosen a more special champagne.  The “amuse-gueules” were really nice, freshly made grissini and tapenade… So basically a flying start. After that I had the “Seawolf accompanied by a risotto with in olive oil marinated summer vegetables and basil”, my friends had the “Sweetbread (Kalfszwezerik) with artichokes, mushrooms and port jus” and   “Rib-eye with red raspberry tarragon sauce”… I had a taste of all 3 dishes (don’t worry, I left some for my friends J ) and I have to say that all 3 were very good! You really taste the good quality of the ingredients and the plats looked like beautiful paintings . Off course we didn’t drink water to accompany this meal, as the choice of wines at “The glorious” is wide, we just asked the sommelier what he would recommend. He suggested us a South African Red wine, the Pinotage (a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault)  from Sumaridge winery. We really enjoyed the choice, the wine was a little bit sweeter and fruitier . We didn’t have a starter, so we felt morally obliged to have a dessert (every excuse is good). It was actually a big surprise because most desserts were made by Master chocolatier Pierre Marcolini. My friends actually discovered it, they took the” Biscuit from dark chocolate , crème brûlee  with Madagascar vanilla , pieces of red raspberry, sabajon of milk chocolate and red raspberry sorbet “ and the other one enjoyed his “Chocolate pie with a hazelnut crust, orange, chocolate mousse from dark Ecuadorian chocolate  with a little Moelleux au chocolat”. They discovered it, because without knowing, they had exactly the same dessert a few weeks ago at the Pierre Marcolini shop…  funny stuff!!  The coffees were also accompanied by Marcolini sweets…

All by all a very nice restaurant and I would definitely return.

Tragaluz

Ever been in Barcelona? No? What are you waiting for??? Ok, it also took me some years to get there, but I really fell in love with this city. I’m not going to talk about this wonderful city, but about a great restaurant group you can find in Barcelona.  The group is called Grupo Tragaluz which in English would actually mean “Skylight”. My girlfriend and I have tried the Bar Lobo, Agua and Bestial. But I’m sure that the next time that we will be in Barcelona , we will go and try the other restaurants of the group. J.  The Group actually has all kinds of restaurants and they all have their own specialties. From a small tapabar to the Michelin star awarded Tragaluz restaurant. They now even have a hotel and I have to admit, it is quit tempting to go there as well.  Both Agua and Bestial are at the beach in Barcelona (Barcelonetta), although from both restaurants I would rather return to Bestial than to Agua.  I liked the food at Agua, and the restaurant is also mentioned in a lot of travel and restaurant guides, but  I think you pay more because of its location (but for Belgian Standard it is still in an affordable price range).  To start we  had the Iberian Ham (I really love ham) and some tapas. Followed by the  “Arroz con bogavante y butifarra” (rice with lobster and botifarra) and the “Langoustines” . We also  had a great regional wine. And I finished with my preferred dessert,  Tarte Tatin andsome coffee, basically a great meal.

As mentioned above, I preferred restaurant Bestial.  Maybe because of the great setting where all the trees were nicely illuminated and because had a table outside or maybe because of the nice service? It could have also been the really great food!!  We again started with some nice tapas  one of the “tapas” was a small wood oven backed pizza, some Iberian ham, tempura of vegetables, etc… after that we had the day suggestion  and we finished with these woooooonderfull pies.

And this leaves us with Bar Lobo , just a few minutes from the Mercat de la Boqueria. Sitting on a little square,  under an umbrella (as it was so hot at the time) enjoyed an endless choice of tapas with some local rosé and white wine (I think the picture below speaks for itself)and I think we almost tried all the tapas they had (besides the anchovies)… I got more hungry while eating, that’s how good it was

Pizza Integrale

I’m a true pizza lover, but the only unfortunate thing is that there are not too many places where they really serve good pizza. So therefore I just make it myself and it only takes a few minutes (rising not included, but you don’t have to stay next to it so …). Lately I always use Whole flour (volkoren), but you can easily use regular flour.  And if you have leftovers of the dough, you can make little sandwiches with it…

Ingredients:

Dough:

  • 500g flour
  • 350ml water  (room temperature)
  • Salt
  • Yeast ( fresh or dried, if dried  1 ½ teaspoon)
  • Olive oil (if wanted and it doesn’t have to be fancy oil)

Topping:

  • Polpa di pomodoro or a thin can of peeled tomatoes
  • Salt, peper oregano and red paprika powder
  • Mozzarella
  • Grated Parmigiano cheese
  • Whatever you want 🙂 , I put ham or parmaham with rucola (the parmaham and rucola after it comes out of the oven)
  • Olive oil  Get it on:
  •  Put the flour in a big bowl and make a hole in the middle
  • On the side of the four you put the salt (don’t be afraid to put enough, ½ eatingspoon)
  • In hole you made, you put the water (and olive oil like I usually do) and the yeast.
  •  Start mixing it all until you get firm dough (like for bread) (see pic below).  I recently bought a machine to do this for me (but before that always done it manually
  • Put the dough under a moist towel and let it rest for at least 45min (you could also make it in the morning for the evening)

  • After the 45 min, you split the down in 2, 3 or 4 pieces and make again little balls; this would then for the pizza itself.

  • Take 1 ball and start flattening it with a rolling pin. Try to get your pizza as round as possible or at least in a form that can fit on your oven tray  🙂  (but don’t worry they pizza police won’t arrest you if it’s not round )
  •   Spread some olive oil on the bottom of your oven tray  Lay your flattened pizza on your oven tray.
  • Pre-heat the oven on 250°C or 482°F
  •  Put your polpa (tomato) in a mixing bowl; add some olive oil, one finely chopped garlic clove, salt, pepper and the paprika powder.  Stir it all. In case you used peeled tomatoes in a can, you should mix it all that all pieces are very little
  •  Put some tomatomix on the pizza, chop the mozzarella and also put this on the pizza.
  • Spread some grated parmigiano on top and add the topic you like. If you would use a salty dried meat or so (like speck, pancetta,Parmaham) put it after it comes out of the oven.

  • Put it in the pre-heated oven for about 10 to 15 minutes (feel if the crust is crispy, if not leave longer)

Buon apetito

When in Köln , do …..

For professional reasons I’m very often in Cologne. From time to time it then also happens that my German colleagues or my Belgian colleagues who joined me to Cologne, feel like going out for dinner. As you guys may know by now, my motto is when in Rome, do as the Romans, so … in Cologne this doesn’t change.

Who thinks of Germany, thinks without any doubt of huge glasses of beer and heavy food.

The place where you can find this for sure, is art Päffgen, you’ll be getting a looooooot of beer. As they won’t stop serving until you put your  beverage coaster on your glass. This is served with some  “Haxen & Hämchen” (knuckles &  ham), but watch out this is no food for beginners J because you get a lot of meat!! I could show you pictures from colleagues of mine stuffing and putting all their weight to eat that piece, but out of respect for them I will not put those pictures on this blog . Oooh and 1 advice, don’t take an appetizer  as you won’t be able to finish your main course.

We always go to the city center Salzgasse bierhaus (as it is close to everything).

No better way to taste the real good German food!!

Hope you’ll get the change to try it. Let me know how it was?

Aux Vieux Bruxelles

Brussels, I never know what to think of this city. I don’t come often in Brussels. Either it is because I have a project there for work there or occasionally just for shopping with my girlfriend.  Another reason is the following one. Some of you might know that I’m a drummer and that I have some American drummer friends coming on tour through Belgium (the same who actually convinced me to start blogging) and as I know that being on tour for months is not always as nice as lots of you might think, I always try to let them relax and stop thinking of their daily routine of travelling – hotel- playing-travelling by taking them out to have a good bite and drink. Brussels is usually the preferred place for tour managers to choose their hotel (because of the highway access + close by airport). Of course, Brussels has hundreds of restaurants, but I mostly like to take my friends to eat some typical Belgian food… like “Stoofvlees”, Mussels, etc… A place I’ve already took some of my friends was Aux Vieux Bruxelles.

It is like going back in time.  Old brown varnished benches, red-white squared tablecloths. Already by seeing that I feel so happy (don’t ask me why, maybe it’s the child in me) and I immediately feel like sitting down and eat more than I can handle. Last time I had “Vol-au-vent”, a small puff pastry filled with a kind of white stew sauce with chicken, little meatballs, mushrooms a squeeze of lemon and topped with a “sauce hollandaise”   (some also put a bit of tarragon). Two of my friends took the mussels (as at that time it was the season) and another friend took shrimps with garlic butter and some vegetables with it. And all of this accompanied with freshly made French fries.

The good thing about this place is that it is not too touristy, most of the people coming here are from Brussels… that usually is my reference to know if the place is worth the visit

 Enjoy

Rome’s trendy village of taste

When in Rome do as the romans… Literally this time , but then for the trendier Romans.  Rome is a city I really love (surprise surprise). The history, the beautiful buildings, the fact it is in Italy, etc… I already visited the city a few times, and like in any other city I’ve tried to find good food . One of the restaurants I go to every time I am in Rome is restaurant Gusto. You could actually call it a restaurant village, as they have a Osteria (kind of a Italian snackbar), Winebar, Restaurant, Pizzeria, Formaggeria (cheesebar), a cookbook store and a wineshop. It is all on the same block at Piazza Augusto Imperatore, which is close to the Via del corso. Gusto is one of THE trendy hotspots in Rome and no matter which of the locations you choose, they are all great. For lunch the Osteria, in the evening the restaurant and afterwards the wine or regular bar to enjoy some live jazz music …. Sounds like a pretty perfect day to me!. But of course, do not forget to enjoy one of the world’s most ancient cities between your meals 😉

If I can’t convince you, just walk by the restaurant and I’m sure you’ll be very tempted. Booking a table might be recommended.

If you prefer a more traditional location, I’m sure I’ll post one soon

Louis de Funès meets gastronomy

Louis de Funès is one of my favorite French actors. I grew up with movies like “Les gendarmes de St-Tropez” and many of the other movies De Funès has made.I have two favorites, “L’aile ou la cuisse” and ‘Le Grand restaurant”. L’aile ou la cuisse is actually based on the “Michelin Guide” story. In this movie Louis De Funès plays Charles Duchemin boss of the Duchemin guide. Mr Duchemin thinks of retiring and wants his son to take over the family business, so they decide to take a trip to finish Mr Duchemin’s last “Guide” as head of his company. On top of that, lots of restaurants get taken over by a big industrial highway restaurantkeeper. They encounter really funny things, especially because his son prefers another carrier.

Le grand restaurant is great, because if you place it back in the years the movie came out… As I think that in high class restaurants, this was the real way of working.

In “Le Grand Restaurant” De Funès plays Monsieur Septime, owner of restaurant “Septime”. In the restaurant, all guests are treated as kings and queens and with the biggest respect you can imagine. This is however in big contrast with his personnel that get yelled to with every small mistake they make. This gives some hilarious scenes.  On of the most famous scenes is where Mr Septime explains high placed politicians how to make the pommes duchess.

Again, you really can’t forget that these movies were made in the 1960’s. But nevertheless these are “Classics”. They have both been translated, but seeing the original version is still the best!!

Have you already seen the movie? Did you like it?
